The Prosperity Gospel: An Analysis of Its Evolution and Influence in Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, 1940-2024 - Dr. Bradley Sliedrecht
This groundbreaking doctoral thesis presents the most comprehensive analysis to date on the rise, spread, and theological transformation of the Prosperity Gospel from 1940 to 2024. With scholarly depth and pastoral insight, Dr. Bradley Sliedrecht traces the roots of prosperity theology from early Pentecostalism and New Thought philosophy to its global manifestations across Africa, Latin America, North America, and Asia.
Combining historical research, theological critique, and international fieldwork-including case studies from Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Americas-this work reveals how prosperity teachings have reshaped faith, worship, and Christian hope across continents. From Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin to Joel Osteen and David Oyedepo, Dr. Sliedrecht critically evaluates the hermeneutics, ethics, and socioeconomic impact of prosperity preaching within Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity.
More than a history, this thesis is a call to theological discernment. It offers pastors, scholars, and lay readers a biblically grounded framework to engage prosperity teachings-affirming what is true, correcting what is distorted, and reclaiming a gospel centered on Christ, not consumerism.
Drawing from over a decade of research and ministry experience, this volume stands as a vital resource for those seeking to understand one of the most influential-and controversial-movements in modern Christianity.
