Discover the historical realities behind one of the most debated events in early Islamic history.
In The Prophet's Last Prayer, the deeply respected Islamic scholar Allamah Sayyid Murtaḍā ʿAskarī delivers a meticulous, critical analysis of the traditions surrounding the morning prayer during the final hours of Prophet Muhammad (ṣ). For centuries, narrations about who led this specific prayer have been utilized to establish political legitimacy and successorship in the early Caliphate. However, a closer look at the primary sources reveals a network of profound contradictions and historical discrepancies.
This scholarly work courageously bridges the gap between the accounts found in the School of the Caliphate (Sunni) and the School of the Ahl al-Bayt (Shi'a), challenging readers to look beyond centuries of blind acceptance.
Through rigorous analytical research, Allamah Askari unpacks vital historical questions:
- The Expedition of Usāmah: Why did the Holy Prophet (ṣ) strictly order senior companions to leave Madīnah under an eighteen-year-old commander, placing severe divine displeasure upon any who stayed behind?
- Contradictory Narrations: How do the main source collections conflict on who initiated the prayer request, whether the Prophet approved, and if he ultimately stopped the prayer to begin anew?
- The Politics of Tradition: What role did subsequent ruling dynasties-including the Umayyads and Abbasids-play in fabricating and propagating these traditions over fourteen centuries to secure political authority?
