This volume undertakes a systematic study of the foreign policy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, demonstrating how - under conditions of profound adversity - he instituted a framework of international relations grounded in justice, prudence, forbearance, and strategic foresight.
The study proceeds thematically, examining the principal instruments of this framework: treaty-making, diplomacy, conflict management, and inter-polity relations. Key case studies include the Charter of Madinah (widely regarded as one of the earliest written constitutions), the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and the corpus of diplomatic correspondence addressed to the Byzantine, Sasanian, Abyssinian, and Coptic rulers. The analysis shows that the operative logic was consistently discursive and principled rather than coercive.
A significant portion of the work is devoted to engaging Orientalist and revisionist objections. Many of these, the author contends, derive from partial historiography or decontextualised reading. Drawing upon both the classical Islamic tradition and contemporary scholarship, each objection is subjected to methodical critique, and balanced, source-based responses are offered.
The author's overarching thesis is that this foreign policy was neither temporally bounded nor contextually exhausted. The principles it articulated - pacta sunt servanda, the protection of religious minorities, proportionality in armed conflict, and the presumptive preference for peace - possess demonstrable relevance to the normative architecture of contemporary international relations.
Written in accessible yet scholarly prose, this work will benefit students, researchers, and the informed general reader. It provides both a grounding in the historical material and an intellectual apparatus for responding to contemporary doubts and polemics.
