Bill Johnson and Maggie Bell are longtime friends, struggling booksellers, and the unlikely founders of an idea neither of them expects anyone to take seriously.
Their used bookstore is failing. The bills are piling up. And Bill has been thinking about an enormous question: What would it mean if humanity discovered that we are not alone in the universe?

From that question emerges the Exotheological Society: not a religion, not a UFO club, and certainly not a place promising answers. It is a secular forum where ordinary people gather to explore extraordinary questions about extraterrestrial intelligence, science, philosophy, mythology, evidence, belief, and humanity's place in the cosmos.
Seven people attended the first meeting, then twenty-four, then fifty.
A reporter takes notice. A meeting is recorded. The video spreads.
Soon Bill's most frequent answer - I don't know - has become a worldwide declaration of intellectual honesty. People who are tired of being told what to believe begin listening to a man who freely admits what he cannot prove.
And then the money arrives.
So does the scrutiny.
Because buried in the Society's past is evidence that may change what everyone believes about Bill, Maggie, and the reason the Exotheological Society was created in the first place.
But what does evidence actually prove?
Can something that was started for one reason become something entirely different?
Can people's motives change?
And when new evidence contradicts the story, we thought we understood, are we willing to change our minds?
