Prompting with Judgment: A Practical Guide to Designing, Testing, and Improving Generative AI Interactions

Prompting with Judgment is a practical introduction to working effectively with generative AI. It moves beyond collections of prompt tricks and teaches prompting as a disciplined process of defining a task, providing context and evidence, evaluating results, and improving the interaction through deliberate iteration.

The book begins with the foundations of artificial intelligence, generative AI, and large language models, then develops a practical approach to prompt design using the TCREI framework: Task, Context, References, Evaluate, and Iterate. It applies these ideas to writing, research, fact-checking, data analysis, creativity, multimodal prompting, reusable prompt systems, and AI-assisted workflows.

Readers also learn how to test prompts systematically, recognize hallucinations and weak reasoning, manage context, use sources responsibly, and address risks involving privacy, bias, copyright, academic integrity, prompt injection, and overreliance on AI.

Throughout the book, the emphasis is on human judgment. Effective AI use requires more than producing an impressive response. You must decide whether the result is accurate, appropriate, ethical, and useful.

Designed for students, educators, professionals, and anyone seeking a structured way to work with generative AI, Prompting with Judgment includes worked examples, practical activities, evaluation methods, review questions, worksheets, and a capstone project that moves readers from basic prompting to responsible, testable AI-assisted work.
