Before the hour fixed for the meeting the great hall of the Union was completely filled and large numbers were unable to gain admission. The meeting was called to order by Mr. George B. Butler, Secretary of the New York Association for the Protection of American Industry, who proposed as Chairman, Peter Cooper, who was received with enthusiastic applause, as was also the name of the Hon. William E. Dodge upon the announcement that that gentleman would assist Mr. Cooper in presiding. The following-named gentlemen were proposed and chosen as vice-presidents: Hon. Hamilton Fish, Jos. P.
