This volume contains the official record of the 1860 Democratic National Convention, held in Charleston and Baltimore. Published under the supervision of the National Democratic Executive Committee, the Proceedings Of The Conventions At Charleston And Baltimore offers a detailed account of the debates, resolutions, and decisions that shaped the party's platform during a pivotal moment in American history.
As the nation teetered on the brink of civil war, the Democratic Party faced deep divisions over the issue of slavery. This book provides invaluable insights into the political maneuvering, sectional tensions, and ultimately, the fracturing of the party that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. Historians and political scientists will find this a primary source document for understanding the complexities of the pre-war political landscape and the challenges of maintaining national unity in the face of irreconcilable differences. The text provides a crucial perspective on the events that defined a nation.
