Just as a great thinker once said, human life is like an onion - built layer upon layer. In the same way, the life of Madhu, the central character of this novel, unfolds in layers like the rings of an onion. The story begins with an unemployed writer struggling to complete his unfinished manuscript. Suddenly, a phone call from a young woman named Rekha helps him bring his writing efforts to a conclusion. Rekha, a well-known bar dancer in Kathmandu, had become his Facebook friend some years earlier. Through their regular conversations, the mysterious layers of her personal and public life gradually come to light - her childhood, youthful experiences, love, sexuality, and the profession she adopted for survival, one that society always views with contempt.
As these inner truths are revealed, the writer finds Rekha's life story so compelling that he decides to weave it into his novel. Eventually, he travels to Kathmandu, meets her in person, and records her many life experiences in his notebook. Thus, the novel beautifully portrays the sweetness and bitterness of love, the harsh realities of society, the fire of ambition, selfishness, pride, hardships, sexuality, and the complex nature of youth and humanity.
At its core, the narrative revolves around the life of Madhu. Having lost her father in childhood, she is forced to dance in Kathmandu's night bars to pay for her sick mother's treatment and to continue her education. Yet the story does not remain confined there. It stretches from Nepal to NASA's headquarters, from the earthly realm to heaven, the underworld, and the divine world. Rarely found in Nepali novels, themes of reincarnation, encounters with Indra and Yama, and direct visions of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva make this work truly unique.
Equally striking is Madhu's long dialogue with Lord Vishnu, which gives the novel the aura of a mythological scripture. In this conversation, Madhu pleads for the salvation of the earthly world and calls for the swift end of the Kali Yuga. How did Madhu, once performing naked dances in Kathmandu's bars, become a celestial maiden dwelling in the divine realm? Why and how did Indra grant her rebirth on Earth? What was her life like in the Madhava incarnation? How did Yama's court prove her innocence?
