The Princess by Alfred Tennyson is a narrative poem first published in 1847 that tells the story of a heroic princess who shuns men and founds a women's university where no men are allowed to enter. A prince, to whom she was betrothed in infancy, and his companions disguise themselves as women and enter the university. After a series of comic and melodramatic events, the princess is wounded during a battle, and is cared for by the prince, which brings about reconciliation.
The poem explores themes of gender roles, feminism, and education within the framework of a Victorian-era narrative.
