ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
Pride and Prejudice was written by English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) and was first published in 1813. It is one of the most popular novels in English literature.
Opening with the line It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife, Pride and Prejudice focuses on the five daughters in the Bennet family (Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia) and their mother's belief that they should marry a man of financial means rather than a man they loved.
Jane Austen was the author of six well known novels including Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818). She also wrote Lady Susan (1871) and Love and Freindship and other Early Works (1790).
Biographies about Jane Austen written by her family members include A Memoir of Jane Austen (1871) and Jane Austen, Her Life and Letters: A Family Record (1913). Many of her letters are included in a compilation in The Letters of Jane Austen (1892).
