Everybody in this town says they'd kill for a part.
Naomi Grant said it too - at parties, in acting class, on the phone to her sister at two in the morning. Then she saw the man in the gray suit sitting in a casting office in Burbank, holding a glass of water. Then the red envelope slid under her door, her name written on the front in calligraphy.
At the house on the hill, past the black doors, there's a long narrow room lined floor to ceiling with mirrors, lit by a hundred candles, where you see yourself and yourself and yourself going away into the dark forever. They call it the Mirror Room. Everybody meets him eventually.
The contract has a clause nobody reads out loud: the Understudy. Someone who stands in for you - and takes everything that was yours.
By the time Naomi learns what she signed, the people she loves are already paying for a fame that was never hers. And the man in the gray suit is patient. He only ever gets what people hand him.
Anything you get from the crossroads, you pay the toll going back.
