A memorial tribute to James Clarke Welling, president of Columbian University (now George Washington University) from 1871 to 1894. This volume commemorates his life and work through speeches and recollections delivered at a memorial service held under the joint auspices of the university and various societies of which he was a member.
The collection offers insights into Welling's contributions to higher education and his impact on the intellectual and social landscape of Washington, D.C. It provides a valuable historical record of the Columbian University during a pivotal period in its development, and reflects the academic and cultural values of the late 19th century.
