A Preface to Molière provides a comprehensive and scholarly introduction to the life and works of the celebrated 17th-century French playwright, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Molière. Written by H. Ashton, this study examines the theatrical landscape of the era, exploring the social and cultural influences that shaped Molière's comedic genius. The work delves into the structure of his plays, the evolution of his characters, and his profound impact on the development of Western drama.
Rather than a mere biographical account, the text analyzes the specific techniques and satirical elements that made Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Miser enduring masterpieces of world literature. By situating Molière within the context of the French court and the bustling Parisian theater scene, Ashton offers readers a deeper understanding of the complexities found in classic French comedy. This work serves as an essential guide for students of French literature and enthusiasts of classical theater, providing valuable insight into the craftsmanship of one of history's most influential dramatists.
