Sau khi hoàn thành 5 tập Lịch Sử Việt Nam Thời Tự chủ với gần 3000 trang; bèn tiếp tục soạn tập 6, chép về phần còn lại của nhà Tây Sơn; và thời Nguyễn vương Phúc Ánh bôn ba phục quốc, cùng 18 năm trị vì của vị Vua này.
Giai đoạn lịch sử thời Tây Sơn mang đặm dấu ấn liên can đến việc Vua Càn Long đầy tham vọng, ông ta muốn vượt trội lịch sử Trung Quốc với danh hiệu Thập Toàn Vũ Công; nhưng lỡ thất trận nhục nhã tại An Nam, thì làm sao có được danh hiệu đó! Với lòng tham danh không đáy, Càn Long sượng mặt đổi trắng thay đen, bằng cách bố trí cho Vua Quang Trung giả đến kinh đô chiêm bái, mong rửa sạch vết nhơ thua trận. Để rồi sau đó vào năm 82 tuổi [1792] tuyên bố Thập Toàn Vũ Công [十全武功], tự xưng là Thập Toàn Lão Nhân [十全老人], trắng trợn ghi chiến công tại An Nam với tiêu đề Càn Long ngũ thập tứ niên An Nam chi dịch [乾隆五十四年安南之役); chiến dịch tại An Nam vào năm Càn Long thứ 54(1789)].
Với tham vọng này, Càn Long phải trả giá rất đắt; năm Càn Long thứ 57 [22/6/1792] bỏ lệ cống vàng, mà trước đó dưới thời Vua Lê Thái Tổ nước ta phải nạp tuế cống cho nhà Minh đến 50 ngàn lạng. Các năm về sau, An Nam cấu kết với thuyền cướp biển người Hoa đánh phá tại vùng biển Phúc Kiến, Quảng Đông nhưng Càn Long đành phải nuốt hờn, ngậm miệng. Vua Quang Trung đã nắm được nhược điểm của Càn Long; nếu ông sống lâu hơn, thì không biết lịch sử sẽ đi về đâu!
Dấu ấn quan trọng khác, ghi công Nguyễn Vương Phúc Ánh kiên trì phục quốc, trải qua nhiều bôn ba, để rồi tạo thế tiến lên, cuối cùng khải hoàn thống nhất đất nước. Bôn ba nơi xứ người, rồi quay mũi giáo trở về nước, thành công trong sự nghiệp phục quốc là sự kiện hiếm hoi trong lịch sử Việt Nam; cuộc trường kỳ đấu tranh của Nguyễn Vương Phúc Ánh, qua nhiều gian nan thử thách; có thể rút ra nhiều bài học hữu ích. Lại cần lưu ý thêm, phép hành sử quyền lực của Nguyễn Vương có những nét đặc trưng. Với chủ trương ăn miếng trả miếng, tàn ác không khoan nhượng với kẻ thù Tây Sơn. Riêng đối những kẻ được cho là đe dọa uy quyền bản thân thì mưu giết không tha; như bố trí giết Thượng tướng quân Đỗ Thành Nhân, bức tử Chưởng tiền quân Lê Văn Quân. Lúc đã về già, lại trù tính an toàn cho Vua nối dõi Minh Mệnh, nên tìm cách giết Nguyễn Văn Thành cho bằng được.
Ba mươi năm lịch sử với những nét sống động, mở đầu cho triều đại nhà Nguyễn gồm 13 Vua [Gia Long, Minh Mệnh, Thiệu Trị, Tự Đức, Dục Đức, Hiệp Hòa, Kiến Phúc, Hàm Nghi, Đồng Khánh, Thành Thái, Duy Tân, Khải Định, Bảo Đại].
