Dear Friends
I wrote Postcards to My Son as a tribute to my son Jason, whose extraordinary life was cut short at the age of 28.
Jason was a gifted photographer, adventurer, sailor, musician, and athlete. He lived life with curiosity, courage, creativity, and a magnetic spirit that touched everyone who knew him.
After Jason's death, on November 10th, his birthday, I began sending a postcard each year to approximately 100 family members and friends. Most of the images featured on these cards are photographs from Jason's travels around the world. I chose a meaningful quote or saying to accompany each photograph, one that I felt captured the spirit or theme of the image. What began as my personal tribute to Jason on his birthday has become a meaningful tradition and a lasting connection to his memory and spirit.
These postcards are what gave birth to my book, Postcards to My Son. As the collection grew, I realized that the photographs and memories were telling a story that deserved to be shared. The truth is, Jason wasn't just my son-he was someone who touched so many lives. I reached out to people who had been part of Jason's life-family members, friends, teachers, professional associates-and asked them to write letters to Jason as if they were speaking to him today. Their heartfelt words became an important part of the book, bringing their own memories of Jason to life and sharing the love, admiration, and connection they continue to feel for him.
Creating this book has been both heartbreaking and deeply meaningful. Through these pages, I celebrate the remarkable life Jason lived and the many people whose lives he touched.
My hope is that Postcards to My Son will remind readers of the enduring bond between a parent and child, the importance of holding onto memories, and how one life can continue to touch others long after it has ended.
