O grande livro dos pintores, ou, Arte da pintura, by Gérard de Lairesse, originally published in 1707 and here in a Portuguese translation from 1801, offers a comprehensive exploration of the art of painting. The book is structured to consider painting in all its aspects, demonstrating techniques through principles and reflections on the works of various masters, while also noting the flaws found in their creations.
This historical treatise provides insights into the artistic practices and theories prevalent in the 18th century, making it a valuable resource for understanding the foundations of art criticism and the evolution of painting techniques. Lairesse's work remains relevant for those interested in the historical context of artistic creation and the enduring principles that underpin the visual arts.
