Em 12 de junho de 1973, a Irmã Agnes Sasagawa, em seu convento na cidade de Akita, Japão, rezava quando observou raios de brilho incomum que pareciam emanar do tabernáculo. O mesmo fenômeno, de origem inexplicável, repetiu-se pelos dois dias seguintes. Em 28 de junho, uma chaga em forma de cruz surgiu na palma da mão esquerda de Irmã Agnes, sangrando copiosamente e causando-lhe dor intensa.
No dia 6 de julho, enquanto orava, a Irmã Agnes, que padecia de surdez, escutou uma voz distinta que vinha da estátua da Virgem Maria na capela. Era o primeiro de três mensagens que a religiosa receberia. Na mesma data, outras irmãs descobriram gotas de sangue que fluÃam da mão direita da estátua, um escorrimento que se repetiria por quatro vezes. A chaga na mão da estátua permaneceu visÃvel até 29 de setembro. Contudo, nesse mesmo dia, a escultura começou a transpirar, notavelmente pela testa e pelo pescoço.
Irmã Agnes recebeu o segundo e o terceiro (e último) recados em 3 de agosto de 1973 e 13 de outubro do mesmo ano, respectivamente. A estátua da Virgem começou a chorar em 4 de janeiro de 1975, um pranto que se estendeu por diferentes ocasiões ao longo de 6 anos e 8 meses. A última lacrimação ocorreu em 15 de setembro de 1981, Festa de Nossa Senhora das Dores, totalizando 101 manifestações de choro.
A vidente, cujo nome Agnes significa cordeiro, foi curada de sua surdez. O milagre, comprovado e sem explicação médica, foi considerado um sinal da autenticidade das visitas de Nossa Senhora.
Em 22 de abril de 1984, após oito anos de investigação minuciosa e consulta com a Santa Sé, as mensagens de Nossa Senhora de Akita foram finalmente aprovadas pelo bispo da diocese de Niigata, Japão, Dom John Shojiro Ito. O prelado declarou os eventos de Akita como sendo de origem sobrenatural e autorizou em toda a diocese a veneração à Santa Mãe de Akita.
Na provÃncia japonesa de Akita, a estátua da Madonna derramou sangue, suor e lágrimas, segundo testemunho documentado de mais de 500 pessoas, entre cristãos e não-cristãos, incluindo o prefeito budista da localidade.
O juÃzo definitivo veio em junho de 1988, quando o Cardeal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefeito da Congregação para a Doutrina da Fé, avaliou os eventos e mensagens de Akita como confiáveis e dignos de fé. O Cardeal observou ainda que Akita se apresentava como uma continuação direta das mensagens de Fátima.
Às três da manhã de 6 de julho de 1973, o anjo da guarda da Irmã Agnes apareceu e lhe disse: Não temas. Eu sou aquele que está ao teu lado e te guarda. Vem e segue-me. Não rezes unicamente pelos teus pecados, mas em reparação pelos pecados da humanidade. O mundo atual fere o SacratÃssimo Coração de Jesus com suas ingratidões e ultrajes. A ferida da mão da SantÃssima Virgem Maria é muito mais profunda que a tua. Agora vamos para a capela.
Ao chegar, o anjo desapareceu. A Irmã Inês ajoelhou-se em profunda adoração. Aproximando-se da estátua para observar a ferida em sua mão, escutou a voz. Sendo milagrosamente capaz de ouvir, a Irmã Agnes recebeu o primeiro recado:
Minha filha, minha noviça, tu me obedeceste bem abandonando tudo para me seguir. É penosa a doença dos teus ouvidos? Podes estar certa de que curarão. Tem paciência. É a última prova. Dói-te a ferida da mão? Reza em reparação dos pecados da humanidade. Cada pessoa desta comunidade é minha filha. Rezas bem a oração das Servas da Eucaristia? Então, rezemos juntas: [Segue-se a oração. Ver ao final]. Reza muito pelo Papa, pelos Bispos e pelos Sacerdotes.
