As sete visões confrontam a teodiceia e o mistério do mal, propondo que a justiça divina pertence a um mundo vindouro transcendente.
Em diálogos com o anjo Uriel, Esdras obtém revelações detalhadas sobre o fim dos tempos, o Messias (o Leão que destrói a Águia, símbolo de Roma) e a restauração de Sião. A obra culmina com Esdras restaurando as Escrituras perdidas: 24 livros para o público e 70 livros secretos para reservado para os sábios.
Com uma longa e complexa histórica de transmissão e canonicidade, não chegou a integrar os cânones judaico, católico romano nem ortodoxo grego. Contudo, teve um status canônico ou quase canônico em várias vertentes ortodoxas e mesmo protestantes. Integrava bíblias históricas como a de Gutenberg, a King James original e as bíblias anabatistas. Ainda hoje, faz parte da notória New Standard Revised Edition.
