Based on history! This simple story is based on the historic Pony Swim that happens every year in Chincoteague Island, Virginia. Volunteer firemen known as Saltwater Cowboys saddle up to herd the ponies every July. They swim the channel from Assateague Island to the town of Chincoteague. Then they hold an auction and have the herd swim back to their home in the saltwater marsh. The money raised from the auction is dedicated to supporting and caring for the herd for the rest of the year.
