The Poetic Edda stands as the most vital source for our understanding of Norse mythology and the heroic legends of the North. This comprehensive collection of Old Norse poems, primarily preserved in the medieval Codex Regius, offers a vivid window into a world of ancient gods, legendary heroes, and profound cosmic wisdom. Within its verses, readers encounter the foundational myths of the Scandinavian tradition, from the creation of the world and the prophecy of its destruction in the Völuspá to the practical and mystical advice of Odin in the Hávamál.
The collection is divided into mythological poems, which detail the exploits and struggles of deities like Thor and Loki, and heroic lays, which recount the tragic sagas of figures such as Sigurth the Dragon-slayer and the valkyrie Brynhild. Translated with scholarly precision and poetic sensitivity by Henry Adams Bellows, this edition captures the rhythmic power and alliterative beauty of the original Icelandic verses. The Poetic Edda is an essential work for anyone interested in the Viking Age, Germanic folklore, or the roots of epic fantasy literature. It remains a cornerstone of world literature, preserving the spiritual and cultural heritage of the pre-Christian North.
