Plotinus and the Ethics of St. Augustine is a two-volume work by Bruno Switalski that explores the relationship between Neoplatonism and the ethics of St. Augustine. Volume 1 focuses on the philosophical ideas of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and how they influenced Augustine's ethical thought. The book delves into Plotinus' concept of the One, the source of all being, and how it relates to the Christian notion of God. Switalski also examines Plotinus' ideas on the nature of the soul, the role of reason in ethics, and the pursuit of happiness. The author then turns to Augustine, exploring how he adapted and expanded upon Plotinus' ideas to form his own ethical system. Switalski examines Augustine's views on free will, sin, grace, and the relationship between the soul and the body.Throughout the book, Switalski highlights the similarities and differences between Plotinus and Augustine, and how their ideas influenced each other. The book is a comprehensive study of the intersection of Neoplatonism and Christian ethics, and will be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy, theology, and intellectual history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
