Somewhere near Elkmont, Tennessee, a tiny firefly named Flicker begins noticing things.
Patterns.
Whistles drifting through the trees.
A forest moving in rhythms nobody seems to understand proper. Unfortunately, Flicker's closest companion is Huck, a crow with enormous confidence and only a passing acquaintance with accuracy.
Huck explains nearly everything.
Incorrectly.
Usually loudly.
Sometimes while standing on fence posts he suspects are supernatural. Alongside is a retired park ranger with a habit of asking careful questions, one wise old salamander who distrusts Huck, and one cicada, who waited seventeen years just to interrupt everybody.
It's a strange summer that unfolds in the Great Smoky Mountains. Funny things happen.

Fireflies blink together in impossible patterns.

Tiny termites quietly build astonishing worlds beneath old cabins.
