Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. THE PATH OF DISOBEDIENCE. My son, if sinners entice thee consent thou not. Amongst other lessons which Mrs. Wyatt's children had been carefully taught, was that of paying respect and showing kindness to the aged and the helpless. She would say to the young people sometimes, ' If you wish to receive the attentions which are so pleasant to the aged when you are old, if you should be spared to become so, you must practise just such conduct as you would like to receive; for, you know, 'with whatsoever measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.' Thus, if you believe God's promises, you will, by acting kindly, lovingly, gently, now, lay up for yourselves treasures of love, kindness, and gentleness, to be repaid you again, perhaps, after many days; and if not repaid here, they will add to the treasure laid up in heaven. Thus taught, the children, as a rule, were kind and respectful in their conduct alike to all. But Alick, mixing as he did amongst many other boys, some of whom were very differently trained and taught, did sometimes forget the good counsels of a loving mother. She would have shielded him from temptation if she could; but not being able to do this, she strove to strengthen her boy to resist it, by putting into his hand the best of all defences--the Word of God, and before his eyes the pattern of Him who was perfect God and perfect man. One evening Mrs. Wyatt guessed from Alick's manner that he had some request to make, but that he was almost afraid to ask, for fear of a refusal.
