Plato's masterpiece, the Symposium, is an insight into how the narratives that create our beliefs and values are not truly our own. It unfolds the complexity between how we think and the stories we tell ourselves. It shows how fundamental values and beliefs about love and beauty, truth and the good life have no intrinsic meaning. Rather, they are rooted in obsolete myths and ancient tragedies. Yet, these are stories that we still believe and that we continually make our own. It brings forth the central question of the Symposium: How can we be conscious of who we are if we are not conscious of what we believe? Our values? Our history? A life worth living?
