Plato's Cosmology: The Timaeus of Plato is a comprehensive translation of the Timaeus, one of Plato's most important dialogues. The book is translated by Francis MacDonald Cornford and includes a running commentary to help readers understand the complex ideas presented in the text. The Timaeus is a philosophical treatise that explores the nature of the universe and the role of the gods in its creation. It presents a detailed cosmology that includes the creation of the world, the nature of matter, the role of the elements, and the place of human beings within the universe. The commentary provided by Cornford offers a detailed analysis of the text, including its historical context, its philosophical implications, and its relevance to contemporary thought. This book is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, the nature of the universe, and the role of the divine in human existence.1937. The commentary in this text is designed to guide the reader through a long and intricate argument and to explain what must remain obscure in the most faithful translation; for the Timaeus covers an immense field at the cost of compressing the thought into the smallest space. Only with some such aid can students of theology and philosophy have access to a document that has deeply influenced mediaeval and modern speculation. Contents: The Timaeus; The Discourse of Timaeus; What Comes About of Necessity; The Cooperation of Reason and Necessity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
