The Plate of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths offers an exhaustive and scholarly examination of one of the most significant collections of gold and silver plate in the world. This work serves as a definitive record of the treasures held by the prestigious London livery company, documenting centuries of exceptional craftsmanship and artistic heritage.
The book details the historical development of the collection, providing meticulous descriptions of individual pieces, including ceremonial vessels, standing cups, and ornate salt cellars. It explores the technical mastery of the goldsmiths and silversmiths whose work defined the aesthetic standards of their respective eras. Readers will find insightful commentary on hallmarks, maker's marks, and the provenance of key items that have played a central role in the company's long-standing traditions within the City of London.
This volume is an essential resource for historians of decorative arts, collectors of antique silver, and anyone interested in the social and economic history of London's guilds. By chronicling these masterworks, the author preserves the legacy of a craft that has been integral to British cultural identity, making it an invaluable reference for understanding the evolution of metalworking excellence and the history of the Worshipful Company itself.
