Advances in ion selective electrode (ISE) technology have brought about a resurgence of research in the field. Many efforts have been focused on lowering the detection limits, increasing the selectivities, understanding the response mechanism, and developing new membrane materials. In this work, an overview of the current state of ISE theory and the development of new membrane materials are presented. Both the phase-boundary and Nernst-Planck-Poisson models are examined. The two models are compared and critiqued. Some of the problems associated with the models are discussed. Investigations into alternatives to conventional plasticized PVC for ISE membranes are presented. The concept of polymerizable plasticizers for use in ISEs is explored. Two novel reactive plasticizers are synthesized and successfully implemented in ISE membranes. The characterization and evaluation of the materials are described. UV cured thiol-ene based self-plasticizing polymers are demonstrated as another viable alternative to plasticized PVC. The polymerization, characterization, and membrane performance are illustrated. Finally, the use of high molecular weight thiol-ene derived plasticizers is described as potential substitutes to the common plasticizers used in many ISEs.
