A Placement of WindowsA great many of the themes that run through this book are the same ones seen flowing through my other books of haiku. My writing continues to drift toward greater abstraction and subjectivity, and I will also say that since this is the direction in which I'm headed it appears that the pace most comfortable for me is slow. Maybe this has to do with my feeling a need to place stones before me as I step, as I don't like to tread on mud or weeds.Haiku has helped me immensely to put my rationality aside, for one can come up with persuasive arguments for why a haiku is good, yet still be bored by it. By the same token a certain haiku can seem to evoke no arguments in its favor and yet have about it an explicable charm and mystique.I am deeply interested in the hidden connections between haiku, as they're constantly echoing each other, like tuning forks sounding each others' overtones. And yet when I'm writing one I never think of another, for the one I'm writing is, to me at that moment, all there is. The play of hidden connections between haiku has a life of its own. I write them, but they then write their own relationships. It's a pleasure to eavesdrop on these. If you enjoy looking out of or into these little windows I've built, then my task will have served its purpose. And if it inspires you to build little windows of your own, then so much the better!
