Pippin returning home himself, using something real. The sun-on-his-back on the right wing side. The reverse of when he left his jungle animal friends.
Genuine stakes. The fact of being lost. A 4-year-old will feel that tension properly, which makes the resolution far more satisfying.
It gives Pippin a hero moment that belongs entirely to him. He doesn't get rescued. He remembers something, reasons it through, and acts. That's unusual and powerful for this age group - children light up when a character their size outsmarts danger with their brain.
It plants a real idea in little minds: the sun tells you which way you're going. Parents, you will love that the book leaves children with something true and useful, not just a warm feeling.
The answer of the sun on his back also works beautifully as a repeated refrain throughout the pages - each time Pippin faces a new danger, he checks: sun on his back. It becomes a kind of courage mantra.
