Everyone in Cottage Creek Garden has a job you can see. Clover flies from flower to flower. Moss carries the basket, slowly. Sunny shades the lettuce with her broad leaves. Everyone except Pip.
When little Theo asks Pip what his job is, Pip doesn't have an answer. He tries flying like Clover and carrying like Moss and watering like Theo, and none of it fits. Everyone else's work shows. His doesn't.
Then the tomato bed grows tired and droopy, and Grandma Bea can't say why. Plenty of sun. Plenty of water. Something else is missing. And the smallest bug in the garden turns out to be the only one who knows what it is.
Pip leads the whole crew to a flat stone by the path and asks Grandma Bea to lift it. Underneath is a busy little world none of them had ever seen: worm tunnels, hurrying beetles, roly-polies at work, roots reaching down like threads. It never stops, Pip tells them, even while you're asleep. Because beneath every good garden there is a hidden crew feeding it from below, and Pip has been one of them all along.
Pip and the Underneath is Book 4 in the Cottage Creek Garden series, a collection of read-aloud picture books about Sunny, Moss, Pip, Clover, and their friends. Each story stands on its own, so readers can start anywhere.
