A computer is a machine built on a foundation of sand. The silicon inside it comes from a common material that can be controlled to act like a switch. This book explains how that simple switch becomes the heart of every device we use.
We start by exploring the transistor, a tiny electronic switch with no moving parts. The machine needs to communicate with the world. Input systems like keyboards and touchscreens translate physical actions into digital signals. Output systems like displays and speakers turn the computer's digital results back into forms we can see and hear.
