Philistia is a novel written by British author Grant Allen, first published in 1884. The book tells the story of a young woman named Minna Cairn, who lives in the fictional town of Philistia in southern England. Minna is a talented artist who dreams of making a name for herself in the world of art, but she is held back by the social conventions of her time and the expectations of her family. As Minna struggles to find her place in the world, she becomes involved with a group of bohemian artists and intellectuals who challenge her beliefs and inspire her to pursue her dreams. Along the way, she must navigate the complexities of love and friendship, and confront the prejudices and narrow-mindedness of the society she lives in.The novel is a commentary on the social and cultural climate of Victorian England, and explores themes of art, individualism, and the struggle for self-expression. It is a vivid portrayal of a bygone era, and a timeless meditation on the human condition.Of course the house was not vulgarly furnished, at least in the conventional sense of the word; Lady Le Breton was far too rigid in her social orthodoxy to have admitted into her rooms anything that savoured of what she considered bad form, according to her lights. It was only vulgar with the underlying vulgarity of mere tasteless fashionable uniformity. There was nothing in it that any well-bred footman could object to; nothing that anybody with one grain of genuine originality could possibly tolerate. The little occasional chairs and tables set casually about the room were of the strictest neglige Belgravian type, a sort of studied protest against the formal stiffness of the ordinary unused middle-class drawing-room.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
