Philip And Alexander Of Macedon: Two Essays In Biography by David G. Hogarth is a book that explores the lives of two of the most influential figures in ancient history: Philip II and his son Alexander the Great. The book is divided into two essays, each focusing on one of these Macedonian rulers. The first essay delves into the life of Philip II, who was responsible for transforming Macedonia into a major power in the ancient world. Hogarth examines Philip's early life, his rise to power, and his military campaigns, including his conquest of Greece. The essay also explores Philip's political and cultural achievements, such as his creation of a new Macedonian capital at Pella and his patronage of the arts. The second essay focuses on Alexander the Great, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. Hogarth examines Alexander's upbringing, his education under Aristotle, and his military campaigns, including his conquests of Persia, Egypt, and India. The essay also explores Alexander's cultural legacy, including his spread of Greek culture throughout the ancient world.Throughout the book, Hogarth provides a detailed and nuanced portrait of these two remarkable figures, drawing on a range of primary sources and historical scholarship. The book is an accessible and engaging introduction to the lives of Philip II and Alexander the Great, and will appeal to anyone interested in ancient history or biography. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
