Pheidias by John Galen Howard is a biography of the ancient Greek sculptor, Pheidias. The book traces the life of Pheidias, from his early years in Athens to his rise as one of the most renowned sculptors of his time. It explores his artistic achievements, including his work on the Parthenon and the statue of Zeus at Olympia, as well as his relationships with powerful figures such as Pericles and Alcibiades. The book also delves into the political and social climate of ancient Greece, providing context for Pheidias' work and the challenges he faced as an artist. Howard draws on historical sources and archaeological evidence to paint a vivid picture of Pheidias' world and the impact of his art.Overall, Pheidias is a comprehensive and engaging account of one of the most important figures in the history of art. It will appeal to anyone interested in ancient Greece, sculpture, or the creative process of a master artist. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
