I was on the cusp of twenty years of age in July 1969 when assigned to the aircraft carrier Midway, home-ported at Alameda but at that time in dry dock at the San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard, Hunter's Point. Because the ship was not yet commissioned, after having been decommissioned in 1966 for extensive modernization, I became TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) to the Hunter's Point Naval base command upon reporting for duty. In various capacities over the next months I witnessed the ship's emergence from the hands of civilian yardbirds to a fully functioning, sailor-occupied ship of the fleet.

The account of my Navy experiences is a time capsule of a bygone, pre-Internet and pre-social media era. People still had to write letters or find telephones to make contact with others when separated. There still was a Cold War with Russia and China as well as a hot war in Vietnam. There still was a Recruit Training Command, Bluejacket Choir, Naval Training Center and Service School Command in San Diego. There still was a Navy shipyard at Hunter's Point near San Francisco. There still was the USS Midway as a viable ship of the fleet. There still was potential for innocence in children, even adults.

Today, millions still live with extant memories of those times and places, while many in later generations are curious about what the world was like back then. Navy boot camp, Service School Command, aircraft carrier Midway, Westpac cruises, and visits to exotic places beckon. Over 100 mostly color illustrations are included on quality paper to provide best viewing. The adventure will make an old salt of you, too.
