Essays and interviews on the wide-ranging and diverse career of the British film theorist, screenwriter, filmmaker, curator, artist, and teacher Peter Wollen.
Peter Wollen (1938-2019) was a formidable thinker, writer, and filmmaker as well as an astute critic of modernity and its manifestations. Although he was known primarily for his work in film studies, particularly his work on auteur theory and his influential book Signs and Meaning in the Cinema, first published in 1969 and now in its fifth edition, this volume unlocks new perspectives on Wollen's work through careful attention to its tremendous breadth and range. The book includes interviews with his contemporaries alongside contributions from a diverse group of international scholars ranging from art history and cultural history to experimental cinema and fashion. Taken together, they demonstrate Wollen's lasting significance for film and media theory while suggesting novel pathways for future research.
