In 1960, Peter Hall became director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon. Within a year, he created the Royal Shakespeare Company, the UK's first national theatre company, a semi-permanent troupe of actors, directors and designers committed to three principles - the troupe, the repertory system and a collective style of performing Shakespeare that was both classical and modern. Hall was joined by his co-directors Peter Brook and Michel Saint-Denis, and by the two young directors to whom he would eventually pass the baton - Trevor Nunn and Terry Hands. These men ran the RSC during its historically important first era, 1960 to 1990, when it stayed committed to those founding principles, and operated as a unique body within the star-orientated British Theatre.
