The Persians is a Greek tragedy play by Aeschylus that tells the story of the Persian War from the perspective of the defeated Persians. The play begins with the arrival of a messenger who reports to the Persian Queen Atossa about the disastrous defeat of the Persian army at the Battle of Salamis. The Queen is devastated and seeks comfort from the ghost of her deceased husband, King Darius. The ghost of Darius appears and tells her about his own failed attempts to conquer Greece and warns her about the consequences of Persian arrogance and pride. The play continues with the arrival of the Persian King Xerxes, who is also mourning the loss of his army. Xerxes is portrayed as a weak and foolish ruler who was easily swayed by his advisors and who led his army to a humiliating defeat. The play ends with the chorus lamenting the fate of the Persians and the loss of their empire.The Persians is a unique play in that it is one of the few surviving ancient Greek plays that is not set in Greece and that portrays the enemy as human and sympathetic. Aeschylus uses the play to explore themes of hubris, the dangers of empire, and the fragility of human power.
