Pericles and Aspasia is a work of historical fiction by Walter Savage Landor, first published in 1836. The book is a series of imaginary conversations between the Athenian statesman Pericles and his lover Aspasia, a well-known courtesan and intellectual in ancient Greece. Through their dialogues, Landor explores the political and cultural life of Athens during the Golden Age, as well as the complex relationship between Pericles and Aspasia. The book is known for its poetic language and vivid descriptions of ancient Greece, and is considered a masterpiece of historical fiction. It is a must-read for anyone interested in ancient history, philosophy, or literature.1884. Poet, classicist and essayist, Landor's strong views and quick temper led him into many disputes and following a potential law suit for libel he spent the remainder of his life, from 1858, on the continent, particularly Florence. He is now remembered more for his prose than his poetry, his best known work being Imaginary conversations of literary men and statesmen, a series of dramatic dialogues. Pericles and Aspasia is a rendering of classical Athens through a series of imaginary letters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
