Peri Hypsus, also known as On the Sublime, is a celebrated work of literary criticism attributed to Longinus, a scholar of uncertain date but generally believed to have lived in the first century CE. This treatise explores the characteristics of sublime writing and its power to transport and elevate the reader. Longinus delves into the sources of sublimity, including grandeur of thought, powerful emotions, appropriate use of figures, and noble diction.
This edition, featuring the Greek text alongside a translation, offers valuable insights into classical rhetoric and aesthetics. On the Sublime has exerted a profound influence on literary theory and continues to be studied for its enduring relevance to understanding the art of effective and moving expression. It remains a cornerstone for anyone interested in the principles of great writing and the appreciation of literary excellence.
