Pepita Jimenez is a novel written by Juan Valera, a Spanish author, and diplomat. The story is set in the 19th century in Andalusia, Spain, and revolves around the life of a young seminarian named Luis de Vargas. Luis is sent to live with his uncle, Don Pedro, in a small town called San Fernando, where he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman named Pepita Jimenez. Pepita is a widow who has recently returned to San Fernando with her young son after living in Madrid for many years. Luis is immediately drawn to Pepita's beauty and intelligence, and they begin to spend time together. As they get to know each other better, Luis starts to question his religious beliefs and his future as a priest. The novel explores themes of love, faith, and morality as Luis struggles to reconcile his feelings for Pepita with his commitment to the church. The story is told through a series of letters between Luis and his friend, Don Pedro, as well as through Luis's own reflections on his experiences. Overall, Pepita Jimenez is a classic Spanish novel that offers a glimpse into the social and religious norms of 19th-century Spain while also exploring timeless themes of love and self-discovery.I confess that I know not what to think of all these singularities. I know so little of women! What the vicar tells me of Pepita surprises me; and yet, though on the whole I believe her to be good rather than the contrary, she inspires me at times with a certain fear on my father's account. Notwithstanding his fifty-five years, I believe that he is in love. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
