Peer Gynt is a five-act play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was first published in 1867 and premiered in Oslo in 1876. The play is loosely based on the Norwegian fairy tale of the same name and follows the life of the titular character, Peer Gynt. Peer Gynt is a young man who is a dreamer and a liar. He is constantly running away from his problems and trying to find happiness in different places. He travels from Norway to Africa, from the mountains to the sea, and meets a variety of characters along the way. The play explores themes of identity, self-discovery, and the search for meaning in life. Peer Gynt's journey is one of self-discovery, as he learns about himself and the world around him. He is confronted with his own flaws and shortcomings, and ultimately must face the consequences of his actions. The play is known for its surreal and fantastical elements, including trolls, witches, and other mythical creatures. It also features music and poetry, with several famous pieces including In the Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood. Overall, Peer Gynt is a complex and thought-provoking play that explores the human condition and the search for meaning in life. It is a classic of Norwegian literature and has been adapted into various forms, including operas, ballets, and films. For my part, may Ingrid of Hegstad go marry whoever she pleases.
