Patience, Or Bunthornes Bride is a two-act comic opera written by William Schwenck Gilbert and first performed in 1881. The story is set in a fictional village in England where a group of lovesick maidens are all infatuated with the same poet, Reginald Bunthorne. However, when a handsome and sincere rival poet named Archibald Grosvenor arrives on the scene, the women begin to question their devotion to Bunthorne and turn their affections towards Grosvenor. The opera is a satire on the aesthetic movement of the late 19th century, which valued beauty and art above all else. Gilbert uses the characters of Bunthorne and Grosvenor to lampoon the pretentiousness and hypocrisy of the movement, while also poking fun at the fickle nature of love and the absurdities of Victorian society. The music for Patience was composed by Arthur Sullivan, who was Gilbert's frequent collaborator. The score features a number of memorable songs, including Twenty Love-Sick Maidens, Love is a Plaintive Song, and If You Want a Receipt for That Popular Mystery.Patience was a critical and commercial success when it first premiered and has remained a popular work in the operatic canon. Its witty dialogue, catchy tunes, and sharp satire continue to entertain audiences over a century later. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
