We are now, says the author, at the end of an age which began four to five hundred years ago and which we called the Modern Age, in contrast with the Middle Ages and Antiquity. What for Spengler was a philosophical hypothesis has now become an everyday reality. At a time when in some respects man's accomplishments are at a peak, there is a loss of faith in the civilization that produced these accomplishments.
John Lukacs discusses such diverse subjects as politics, learning, race, science, religion, art, and nature to illustrate specifically how this loss of faith has brought us to the end of the modern age and into a new Dark Ages from which some of our descendants may hopefully emerge.
