An interesting aspect about Mr McIntyre's recollections, in this most enlightening and absorbing book, is that he doesn't recall the past with romantically tinted glasses - a trap that so many memoirs fall into. It is a volume that adds significantly to that genre of publications regarding Ireland's social history ... going back to William Carlton.
