And let all who minister in holy things look to it that they prove themselves true shepherds of the flock by entering in at the door, Jesus Christ. Let them not preach themselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord. Let them, both in their souls and in their ministry, know nothing as a ground of hope save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. Let them be simple, faithful, diligent pastors. Let them point all to the Lord Jesus: Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! and strive to build up believers in him. Then their work will not be in vain. Them that honour me I will honour. Though their gifts may be small, and their sphere narrow, yet they shall have souls for their hire, and in the great day there will not be wanting some who will be their crown of rejoicing. XXIII. THE GOOD SHEPHERD. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fieeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fieeth, because he is an hireling-, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
