This dissertation addresses the origins and development of pachuco culture from the first decade of the twentieth century to the 1950s. The most popular definition of pachucos refers to Mexican American youth who wore zoot suits during World War II in Los Angeles. The author argues for a more nuanced and locally distinct understanding of pachuco culture. Specific attention is paid to the Mexican influences of pachuco culture in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, the Native American influences in Tucson, the African American influences in Los Angeles, and the Mexican American influences in Mexico City. The findings of this dissertation are compared and contrasted with the scholarship on zoot culture which focuses on Los Angeles, the Zoot Suit Riots, and the Sleepy Lagoon Case.
