It was the mid-60s, a turbulent period in American history. But amidst the uncertainty came a bright light: the passage of the Special Education Act on April 11, 1965. This legislation was part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. More than 50 years later, its impact has extended into the most rural areas of America. It was a blessing for America's forgotten and underprivileged children-those who might have slipped through the cracks of the school system and, eventually, society. It took two years to train teachers to work with children with special needs. The program began just after the Summer of Love as a pilot initiative in major U.S. cities with the greatest need. Fresno, California-my hometown-was selected as one of those cities. There, I met one of the finest men I've ever known: Mr. Cheever, a special education teacher who gave me the gift of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Many before him had tried and failed, but he succeeded. I was the product of a broken home, abandoned by my mother at six months old. I was raised by a father who suffered from severe PTSD and was a hardcore alcoholic battling demons from the Korean War. That trauma would trickle down to my brothers and me, leaving behind the deep scars of alcohol and drug abuse. Because of this, I was an ideal candidate for the new program-coming from a poor and dysfunctional family. This is a story of survival, forgiveness, faith, loyalty, and love.
