On National Power argues that the United States is not losing power because of external enemies, but because its leadership no longer understands what power is or how it functions in the real world.
National power is not slogans, GDP tables, or moral posturing. It is the practical ability to compel outcomes-to deter adversaries, reassure allies, and maintain internal legitimacy. That power emerges from the integration of legitimacy and control not from any one domain in isolation.
The work reframes deterrence as an economy: a system governed by costs, credibility, and expectations. Deterrence only works when threats are believable, enforcement is consistent, and the price of defiance is clearly higher than compliance. When leaders bluff, outsource enforcement, or substitute narrative for action, the economy collapses. Adversaries stop believing. Allies hedge. Citizens disengage.
Using analogies from special operations and tactical leadership, the book shows how effective power is exercised at the lowest level: clarity of mission, unity of effort, discipline in execution, and relentless alignment between ends, ways, and means. Strategic failure occurs when national leaders abandon these principles-confusing intent, multiplying objectives, and dispersing accountability.
The central indictment is blunt: America's ruling class has lost the plot. It no longer prioritizes deterrence, misprices risk, inflates symbolic gestures, and tolerates economic policies that hollow out the productive base required for sustained power. This erosion manifests domestically as affordability crises and declining trust, and internationally as opportunistic aggression by rivals.
On National Power is not nostalgic and not partisan. It is a call for strategic sobriety: to rebuild legitimacy through competence, restore control through credible enforcement, and re-anchor national power in economic realities rather than ideological fantasies. Power, it concludes, is not about dominance-it is about order. And order, once lost, is costly to regain.
The author is a retired U.S. Air Force officer and strategist with over two decades of experience in national security, operational leadership, and strategic planning. He holds a PhD in Military Strategy from the U.S. Air Force School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS), where he conducted graduate research on national power, deterrence, and strategic competition. He served in senior strategic roles, including as the lead speechwriter at the highest levels of military leadership, where the language of power, legitimacy, and resolve is carefully calibrated for global audiences.
His career spans tactical command, operational planning, and senior-level strategy, providing a practitioner's perspective on how power is actually generated, exercised, and squandered. His work focuses on the mechanics of legitimacy, control, and economic capacity-arguing that deterrence functions as an economy governed by credibility, cost, and enforcement.
On National Power reflects a career spent confronting the gap between how power is discussed in theory and how it fails in practice, and a conviction that strategic clarity, once lost, is both dangerous and difficult to recover.
