Caught between the obligations and expectations of being the child of the immensely powerful and ruthless King Offa and Queen Cynethryth of Mercia and her relentless desire for the daughter of the moneyer, Eadburh forges a life of love, fidelity, violence and sex. With the help of the king's huntsman (a butch dyke, partnered to the night cook) Eadburh learns the sexual arts and the more deadly arts, which is essential because Edwyna, the moneyer's mute daughter is a delicious girl on a vendetta against the perilous incursions from the kingdom of Kent.
